Hey, today we’ll have a look at one of the conjugation patterns in French, and in particular at regular verbs whose infinitives end in -re. Here belong verbs like perdre, attendre or répondre, to mention just a few. We’re going to focus on the Present Tense.
Conjugation
Without further ado, let’s jump right into the conjugation of these verbs. As an example, let’s use the verb attendre (to wait):
attendre – to wait | |||
j’ | attends | I | wait |
tu | attends | you | wait |
il | attend | he | waits |
nous | attendons | we | wait |
vous | attendez | you (all) | wait |
ils | attendent | they | wait |
Examples
This group of verbs is not as large as the group of verbs with infinitives ending in –er, but some common verbs belong here. Let’s have a look at some examples:
vendre | Elle vend sa maison. | She’s selling her house. |
entendre | J’entends la musique. | I can hear the music. |
perdre | Tu perds toujours les clés. | You always lose the keys. |
descendre | Nous descendons de l’autobus. | We get off the bus. |
répondre | Vous répondez à mes questions. | You answer my questions. |
défendre | Ils défendent leur voisin. | They defend their neighbor. |
étendre | J’étends une nappe sur la table. | I’m spreading a cloth on the table. |
prétendre | Il prétend qu’il ne la connaît pas. | He claims he doesn’t know her. |
pendre | Nous pendons le tableau au mur. | We’re hanging the picture on the wall. |
fondre | La neige fond. | The snow is melting. |
rendre | Il rend les livres à la bibliothèque. | He’s taking the books back to the library. |
