Conjugation of Regular Verbs with Infinitives Ending in -RE in French

Hey, today we’ll have a look at one of the conjugation patterns in French, and in particular at regular verbs whose infinitives end in -re. Here belong verbs like perdre, attendre or répondre, to mention just a few. We’re going to focus on the Present Tense.

Conjugation

Without further ado, let’s jump right into the conjugation of these verbs. As an example, let’s use the verb attendre (to wait):

regular verbs

attendre – to wait

Examples

This group of verbs is not as large as the group of verbs with infinitives ending in –er, but some common verbs belong here. Let’s have a look at some examples:

regular verbs

vendreElle vend sa maison.She’s selling her house.
entendreJ’entends la musique.I can hear the music.
perdreTu perds toujours les clés.You always lose the keys.

descendreNous descendons de l’autobus.We get off the bus.
répondreVous répondez à mes questions.You answer my questions.
défendreIls défendent leur voisin.They defend their neighbor.
regular verbs

étendreJ’étends une nappe sur la table.I’m spreading a cloth on the table.
prétendreIl prétend qu’il ne la connaît pas. He claims he doesn’t know her.
pendreNous pendons le tableau au mur.We’re hanging the picture on the wall.

fondreLa neige fond.The snow is melting.
rendreIl rend les livres à la bibliothèque.He’s taking the books back to the library.
