Today we’ll be talking about a construction that corresponds to the English to be going to and, just like in English, is used to talk about plans, intentions, and predictions based on current circumstances.
Conjugation
This construction is easy because it has an almost identical counterpart in English. What we need is the verb IR, the preposition A and the infinitive. Here´s the full conjugation:
voy | a cantar | I | am going to | sing |
vas | a comprar | you | are going to | buy |
va | a llover | it | is going to | rain |
vamos | a contestar | we | are going to | answer |
vais | a tomar | you | are going to | take |
van | a hacer | they | are going to | do |
Reflexive verbs
In case of reflexive verbs there are two possibilities. The reflexive pronoun may either precede the personal form of IR or be attached to the infinitive. Have a look:
Me voy a casar este año.
Voy a casarme este año.
I´m going to get married this year.
Intentions, Plans
The construction is used to talk about intentions and plans. Have a look at the following examples:
Tengo sueño, voy a acostarme.
I´m sleepy, I´m going (to go) to bed.
¿Qué vais a hacer ahora?
What are you (all) going to do now?
Vamos a ir al museo.
We´re going (to go) to the museum.
¿Cuándo vas a decírmelo?
When are you going to tell me that?
No voy a ser soldado.
I´m not going to be a soldier.
Predictions Based On Current Circumstances
Like in English, it´s also used to talk about predictions based on what is going on right now. Here are some examples:
Mira, el volcán va a entrar en erupción.
Look, the volcano is going to erupt.
Llévate el paraguas, va a llover.
Take an umbrella, it´s going to rain.
Cállate, va a hablar el ministro.
Be quiet, the minister is going to speak.
Mira al acróbata, él va a caerse.
Look at the acrobat, he´s going to fall down.
